5 things about new Formula One chief executive Chase Carey

Chase Carey was appointed as chief executive of Formula One following Liberty Media's takeover of the sport.

The American has already been operating as the sport's chairman but replaces Bernie Ecclestone as a figurehead.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at five things you may not know about the new face of F1.

1. He was a former rugby player

Carey holds a master's degree from Harvard University but before that he received a bachelor's degree from Colgate University - where he was also a member of the rugby team, who now have an award named after their former student.

2. He sports some serious facial hair for a reason

Carey keeps a distinctive handlebar moustache, reportedly to hide a scar he received after a car accident on the way to a college football game.

3. He is a close friend of Rupert Murdoch

The American has worked closely with media mogul Rupert Murdoch since 1988 and Murdoch labelled him as "his partner" during a press conference in 2012.

4. It is Charles, not Chase

Although he prefers to go by the name Chase, Carey's legal paperwork states his name as Charles G. Carey.

5. He has a history of pulling off big-money sports deals

Carey played a key role in brokering a deal between Fox Network and the NFL worth over $1.5billion, not bad for a man who reportedly enjoys hamburger and fries as an executive lunch.
