Alonso hoping for a 'crazy race' in the rain

Date published : 25 Nov 2012 - 07:06:24

Fernando Alonso admitted he needs a 'crazy race' if he is to beat the odds and land his third drivers world championship in Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix.

"We need some strange circumstances, we need a chaotic race in a way, rain or something, let's hope we see something like that," he said.

He described his eighth place on the grid for Sunday's season-ending showdown Brazilian Grand Prix gas "no surprise" and said he is confident he can finish on the podium.

The Ferrari driver needs to outscore defending champion German Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull by 14 points in the race to snatch the title.

He qualified eighth while Vettel qualified fourth.

But Alonso was undaunted and declared himself content with his qualifying laps.

He said: "It's not a surprise because we started seventh in Abu Dhabi, ninth in the USA and eighth here. So it's more or less as expected.

"We'll try to repeat our performance on Sunday and reach the podium like Abu Dhabi and Austin."

Alonso denied he and Ferrari had gone for a fully wet set-up in qualifying in anticipation of Sunday rain.

"We ran with maximum downforce in the dry so obviously it is the same in the wet, so no big changes," Alonso insisted.

"I don't think anyone gambled today for a wet set-up because there is minimal changes."
