Jenson Button was handed a three-place grid penalty for overtaking under red flag conditions during Friday's opening free practice session for this weekend's United States Grand Prix.

Button was found to have passed another car in his McLaren after the session was red-flagged because of a problem with a medical helicopter.

The incident happened 14 minutes into the delayed session and led to the 2009 world champion being punished under the FIA International Sporting Code.

It is the first time this year that Button has been hit with a grid penalty.
