Button: 2010 is going to be electric

World champion Jenson Button expects the competition this season to be 'electric' - and reckons Formula 1 will need to take a close look at itself if the action doesn't live up to expectations with so much quick drivers and teams on the grid. Most pundits expect McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes to be fairly evenly-matched at the front of the field, with the likes of Sauber, Renault, Toro Rosso, Williams and Force India also capable of starring on occasion. With Button joining Lewis Hamilton at McLaren, Fernando Alonso pairing up with Felipe Massa at Ferrari and Michael Schumacher returning with Mercedes, the personality stories ought to be just as fascinating. Button said he was looking forward to this season as much as the fans. "The competition is very fierce, but that's what's exciting," he said. "For a fan of Formula 1, this season should be electric, it really should be. "If it's not, we're doing something seriously wrong. "It's great to have Felipe back after his horrific accident, it's great to have Michael back because it makes me feel young again... "Looking at this race, I don't think there have been so many competitive drivers in competitive cars for a long time. "It's crazy the amount of drivers out there who you respect and you think could fight for the world championship. "It might be a different story when the race starts - one team might be much further ahead, but it doesn't look like that at the moment, it all looks very compact and competitive. "It's just staggering, the amount of talent in Formula 1 at the moment." He insisted that he had put his 2009 triumph to the back of his mind and would be trying to prove himself all over again in 2010. "Maybe in the back of your mind you have confidence that you didn't have before, but everything else is out of the window," said Button. Having started 2009 with six wins from the first seven races, he believes whoever gets the early advantage in Bahrain this weekend could be similarly hard to stop in the 2010 title race. "I think for every champion it's important to be quick out of the blocks," Jenson said. "If you look back, the guy who wins the championship is normally strongest from the word go. "So I think it's important for all of us to be up there at the front here in Bahrain." Button added that he already felt totally settled at McLaren and alongside Hamilton after his shock winter switch from Brawn. "I feel like I'm comfortable in the car and my engineers and myself understand each other well," he said. "We've got a good bond already. "I've spent more time with Lewis over the winter than I think I have with other team-mates over a season. "We understand each other, and we understand that we both want to win."
