F1 proposes refuelling return

The F1 Strategy Group has proposed bringing refuelling back to Formula One as one of a raft of changes it would like to see made by 2017.

Other suggestions made by the Group - which is made up of F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, FIA president Jean Todt and representatives from McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull, Williams and Force India - include plans to make cars five to six seconds a lap faster.

This could be achieved, the Group said, by widening tyres, reducing the weight of cars and changing the rules on aerodynamics.

Other possible changes put forward would produce "higher revving engines and increased noise" and "more aggressive looks".

Refuelling has not been part of Formula One since the 2009 season.

An FIA statement read: "The Strategy Group members have debated a number of levers aimed at improving the show. An initial series of measures has been voted.

"For 2016: Free choice of the two dry tyre compounds (out of four) that each team can use during the race weekend.

"For 2017: Faster cars - five to six seconds drop in lap times through aerodynamic rules evolution, wider tyres and reduction of car weight; r eintroduction of refuelling (maintaining a maximum race fuel allowance); h igher revving engines and increased noise; m ore aggressive looks.

"A few other measures have also been discussed but require further investigation before they can be implemented: A global reflection on race weekend format and m easures to make starts only activated by the driver without any outside assistance."

Any changes would need to be approved by the F1 Commission and the FIA's World Motor Sport Council before they could be implemented.
