FIA approves McLaren's wing design

McLaren has passed the FIA's pre-event scrutineering checks in Bahrain despite the threat of a furore over its rear-end design.Rivals had queried whether the layout of McLaren's engine cover, airbox and rear wing 'stalled' the airflow around the wing in a manner not permitted by the rules, and which would give the team a straightline speed advantage.Red Bull's Christian Horner said last week that his team was curious about McLaren's design, although McLaren has always been adamant that it had consulted FIA technical delegate Charlie Whiting on its plans and had received approval. The Woking team invited Whiting to its Woking base last week for a further legality check, but in the event travel delays for Whiting meant this did not take place until Thursday at Sakhir.Whiting proceeded to approve McLaren's design, clearing it to participate in this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix.
