Horner hopes for Pirelli extension

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has backed Pirelli to remain as Formula One's sole tyre supplier.

Last month Michelin signalled its intent to return to the sport after submitting a bid to take over from Pirelli when its contract expires next season.

The French manufacturer, last involved in grand prix racing in 2006, revealed that its proposal would be based on 18-inch wheels, a move away from the current 13-inch rims, while also expressing their disillusionment with the direction the sport is heading in.

Pirelli has been Formula One's only tyre supplier since it replaced Bridgestone in 2011. But its remit to produce a fragile tyre which leaves drivers unable to push to the limit during races has attracted widespread criticism from a number of sectors within the sport.

But speaking ahead of Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix, Horner believes Michelin's proposal would not be beneficial for the sport.

"An 18-inch rim, and one pit stop is going to do nothing for the spectacles of the grands prix," Horner said.

"We need to do the opposite - two-or-three stop races, controlled degradation, maybe more choice for the teams in terms of the tyres they can take to races, and that is all the things we are talking about."

A new set of regulations to make Formula One cars faster and more aggressive for the 2017 campaign are already in place.

And the sport's ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone will determine whether Pirelli retains its contract beyond next year.

Horner added: "Pirelli have done a good job since they were involved in Formula One.

"Hopefully with the car that is coming for 2017 - which is going to be quite a bit different, quite a bit quicker with tyres that are significantly different to what we have now - then that represents a great challenge and h opefully Pirelli will be successful with that."
