Kovalainen appeared to suggest on Thursday that he was not always backed 100 per cent by the Woking-based team.
"We tried very hard with McLaren towards the end of my time there. It didn't work out. I don't want to get into the reason why too much, there's no point," said the Finn, who has joined new outfit Lotus this year.

"I am doing things differently at Lotus and my target is to get 100 per cent out of the team all the time. At McLaren I felt I didn't get everything out of the team."
Button has been warned in some quarters that he is entering "a lion's den" in joining McLaren, who have nurtured team-mate Lewis Hamilton since childhood.
Ferrari's launch of their F10 in Maranello on Thursday was notable for some sniffy remarks from the team's president, Luca di Montezemolo, regarding former driver Michael Schumacher, who has come out of retirement to race for Mercedes GP.
"It was me that put the idea of returning to F1 in his head," said the Italian, whose dream of seeing the 41-year-old back in a Ferrari was thwarted by Schumacher's neck injury and continued opposition to the team's plan for a third car.
Schumacher recently appeared on German television in an advert for a red Mercedes sports car, which also clearly irked di Montezemolo.
"If there was the possibility of a third car, with great respect for Mercedes, Michael would have been promoting a real red Ferrari not a red Mercedes," he said.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton's father, Anthony, has announced plans to run a series of academy days at tracks, mainly in the UK, that would allow young drivers to gain experience in a fleet of 2009-spec F1 cars.
