Nelson Piquet Jnr waiting for Singapore crash fallout to end before making comeback

Date published : 24 Sep 2009 - 12:09:12

The Brazilian was told to deliberately crash his vehicle to facilitate a victory for his Renault team-mate at last year's Singapore Grand Prix, which has led to team boss Flavio Briatore receiving a lifetime ban and Renault being handed a two-year suspended sentence. Piquet escaped punishment after being granted immunity, but is without a team after being dropped by Briatore in August.  Related ArticlesRenault's principal sponsors pull outBernie Ecclestone: Flavio Briatore ban too harshLewis Hamilton lends support to Piquet JnrFerrari door opens for Fernando AlonsoNelson Piquet Jnr accused by 'Witness X'Renault to stay in Formula OneBut he admits that a return will not be a straightforward process, with teams cool on the idea of employing a driver so heavily associated with the scandal. "I am aware that because of this (scandal) it will be difficult," Piquet told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport. "Some people will be afraid that the same thing will happen. But it was a unique case and I have learned from it." Earlier today Piquet Jnr received the backing of Lewis Hamilton, a sign that the 24-year-old Brazilian's peers on the grid are comfortable with his potential return to the sport. Piquet Jnr added: "If I can't find a place in F1, perhaps for one year I will go to America and try to do a good job there until the waves have calmed down a bit. "I was there in August for a week and spoke with some teams."
