Renault chasing front-end grip
Renault's chief race engineer Alan Permane was pleased with the team's start to the Bahrain weekend, but says the team needs to find some more front-end grip to move up the order. The reconstituted team now majority-owned by Gerard Lopez's Genii Capital firm and run by Eric Boullier and Bob Bell had an encouraging start to the 2010 season by featuring in the top 10 in both practice sessions.Robert Kubica was third quickest in the morning (albeit probably on a lighter fuel load than the top teams) and rookie Vitaly Petrov finished a creditable eighth in the afternoon.Permane was satisfied with the performance of both the team's new drivers and said the priority was now to rectify some understeer on the R30.Robert did everything we expected of him today and Vitaly also had a very solid first day of practice as an F1 driver, he commented. In terms of car balance, there is still a little bit of understeer that we need to dial out overnight, but the rear end is stable and we have a good car under braking, which is what you need at this track. All in all, it's a satisfying start to the weekend.Petrov felt he had made good progress on debut practice outing. It was a great feeling to be out in the car for the first time this morning, but we had a busy programme so I got straight down to work, said the Russian. We had a few small problems to begin with, but we will work hard overnight to try and improve the car.My first F1 qualifying session tomorrow will be very interesting.
