Stevens frustrated by pit errors

Will Stevens criticised his Manor team for their decision-making during Sunday's British Grand Prix.

The 24-year-old was on course to finish 12th at his first home grand prix before a pit error and a spin saw him lose out to team-mate Roberto Merhi.

Stevens hit the wall as a number of rain showers fell over Silverstone - with fellow Brit Lewis Hamilton eventually taking the chequered flag.

But, despite 13th place still representing his best finish in the sport, Stevens was unhappy with a series of events during the race.

"It was an incredibly frustrating race," he said.

"The whole weekend has been so positive for us, three-quarters of the race was really good. We wanted to extend our run because the rain was coming.

"A sequence of events happened which resulted in what happened - I reported it was raining and the team made a decision to bring me in but when I came in no-one was ready for me.

"I just sat there. I lost 15 seconds in the pit-lane which is frustrating when I had just built up a 20-second gap to my team-mate."

Stevens' afternoon went from bad to worse as he was not called in when the heaviest of the rain started - meaning he was a sitting duck on a worn set of intermediate tyres that ultimately saw him spin and hit the wall.

"The team opted to pit Roberto first even though he was behind me," he said.

"So he didn't drive in as wet conditions as I did so I came off because the tyres were completely finished - I wasn't even pushing that hard.

"Overall the weekend has been really positive, it is a good result for the team being 12th and 13th but on the same token it is incredibly frustrating for myself given how our pace has been all weekend."

Stevens felt the blame for the errors fell squarely at the door of the team and was disappointed to end his inaugural home race in such a fashion.

He added: "I don't personally see how I could have done anything else.

"Every driver would have reported that it was raining, if we get called in then all I can do is come in.

"In terms of that there is no more I could have done. We haven't done hardly any running in the wet this year which makes our lives incredibly difficult when we end up in the rain but there are reasons for all these things and we need to work together as a team to sort the situation out.

"I had P12 comfortably wrapped up and it would have been nice to get my best result in F1 at my home grand prix.

"That is racing, we always knew Silverstone would be mixed weather-wise, of course it is more frustrating happening here but it would happen anywhere. We will move forward as a team, I'm sure we will learn from our mistakes and turn up to the next race in Hungary stronger and better than we were here."
