Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel will start on pole for the Bahrain Grand Prix after the world champion topped the times in final qualifying here on Saturday.

The German, claiming his first pole of the season and the 31st of his career, will be joined by McLaren's Lewis Hamilton on the front row in Sunday's race.

Vettel's teammate Mark Webber and Jenson Button in the second McLaren occupy the second row.

Nico Rosberg, the winner in China last weekend, came in fifth but his fellow Mercedes driver, seven time former champion Michael Schumacher, will start towards the back of the grid after failing to make it out of the first qualifying session due to a mechanical problem.
