GPUpdateEng takes third win of the season at Brands Hatch18 July 2010Philipp Eng claimed his third victory of the season at Brands Hatch in a race that will be remembered for a controversial clash between championship rivals Jolyon Palmer and Dean Stoneman. Starting from second, Eng kept position away from the line as polesitter Kazim Vasiliauskas began to edge into the distance. Behind the lead duo Jolyon Palmer had come from fifth to fourth, with Dean Stoneman also moving up from seventh on the grid into fifth. On lap four Stoneman tried to dive down the inside of Palmer at Paddock Hill, but appeared to lose the front of the car temporarily, running wide and missing the apex in the process. Palmer, on the outside, had nowhere to go and was forced into the gravel and out of the race. That allowed Tom Gladdis to slip by Stoneman and into third, which became second at the halfway stage of the race as race leader Kazim Vasiliauskas retired with gearbox issues. The front trio remained separated by less than 1.5s for the rest of the race, with Gladdis come under the most pressure as Stoneman attempted a late pass. Gladdis hung on to take second, however, with Eng profiting from the squabble to eventually finish half a second clear. Stoneman moves into the championship lead as a result of the race, while Eng's win means he jumps Will Bratt and moves back into third overall. I really don't see the the Stoneman/Palmer incident in the same way. As with on the first lap when Stoneman was completely alongside arriving at the apex to the corner, Palmer shut the door putting Stone man across the kerbs and grass. In the incident, again Stoneman was alongside arriving at the apex only this time he didn't move when palmer tried to close the door way to late, the rear wheels touched, the rest is history.
