Anthony Davidson was left savouring one of the finest drives of his career after claiming victory in the Autosport 1,000km of Silverstone.
Davidson and co-driver Nicolas Minassian cruised to the win in their Peugeot 908 HDi by 42 seconds from the non-works Oreca Peugeot of Stephane Sarrazin and Nicolas Lapierre, completing the distance in five hours and 11 minutes.
Their triumph was never in doubt after the pole-sitting Audi R15 TDI of Allan McNish and Tom Kristensen retired with a differential failure after the first half hour of the race.
A thrilled Davidson said: "Without a doubt this was my best win with Peugeot. I didn't put a wheel wrong.
"It's a little step to making up for the disappointment of Le Mans. We are overjoyed with what we have achieved."
A disappointed McNish, a previous three-time winner of the race, added: "Exiting a corner the car suddenly lost drive and I coasted to a stop.
"It's a problem we've not previously encountered and we won't know the cause until we've made a thorough inspection.
"It was a great shame as until then, it had been a fantastic Audi versus Peugeot duel."
