Australian Jack Miller claimed a surprise maiden MotoGP victory in a rain-affected race at Assen in the Netherlands on Sunday.

The race began on a drying track but was halted with 12 laps to go when torrential rain returned. The restart saw falls for Dani Pedrosa, Cal Crutchlow, Andrea Dovizioso, who was on pole for the restart, and then race leader Valentino Rossi but Miller coped best with the slippery conditions.

The 21-year-old Marc VDS rider capitalised on the mayhem, passing Marc Marquez with eight laps to go before maintaining a comfortable lead to the chequered flag.

Marquez finished second to extend his overall lead to 24 points ahead of Jorge Lorenzo, who claimed one point by finishing 10th. Britain's Scott Redding filled the final place on the podium.

There were also first-time winners in Moto2 and Moto3 with Takaaki Nakagami and Francesco Bagnaia respectively taking those races.
