David Salom (Provec Motocard.com Kawasaki) has had an interesting first year as an official four-cylinder rider in WSS racing. The 26-year-old from Mallorca is now almost a veteran in terms of Supersport World Championship race starts with 46, but his first year as an official Kawasaki rider has seen a step change in his performance level. In a Spanish-based team for 2011, the 2006 Spanish CEV Champion now has many of the elements needed to compete at the highest level. Although he is still waiting in his first win in this category, a career best of second came along at Silverstone, not too long after his first podium at Motorland Aragon in June.
Said David, who was only a second behind winner Chaz Davies (Yamaha ParkinGO) at Silverstone, "A good result for us. Right at the very end I had the same tyre performance as Chaz, both very good. I tried hard in the braking zones but Chaz is very strong in braking and it was not possible to make a pass. I passed at one stage but he got me back again. I think it was possible to win, but only if I had been right at the front straight away. My race pace was good and I'm happy for the team because we worked very hard."
Overall, Salom moved to second with that result and although a long 42 points distant from Davies, he is the only one of the top riders to have finished every race with decent points and no non-finishes, even at Monza when he was eighth in the race and 14th on the grid after being forced to ride with a compromised machine set-up.
As Salom said, "Second position in the championship now, which is very good for me this year, but Chaz is quite far ahead. I still think it is possible to fight for the championship. It will be difficult, but we have four races left and I think I am the only rider to have finished in the points in every race so far."
