Jorge Lorenzo produced a record-breaking lap in final qualifying to claim pole position for Sunday's MotoGP in Jerez.

The Spaniard became the first man to break the one minute 38 second barrier at the circuit, clocking 1min 37.910secs to build on his dominance in Friday's two practice runs.

Compatriot Marc Marquez will start from second on the grid after defying a fractured finger to finish 0.390s behind Lorenzo.

Championship leader Valentino Rossi will start from fifth, behind Ducati's Andrea Iannone and Yamaha's Pol Espargaro in third and fourth respectively.

Aleix Espargaro is only six thousandths of a second behind Rossi in sixth, while two Britons will also start in the top 10 with Cal Crutchlow and Bradley Smith in seventh and 10th places.
